Seeing Herbert in his finery is - if Alfred were breathing, he would have stopped. It brings back such a strange mix of memories, and brings an even headier rush of feelings. He tries to keep them at bay, but they spill out of him unbidden, heart full and eyes sparkling. He's still nervous about what's going to happen...still worried about fumbling it somehow.
But there is no question in his mind about going through with it. Alfred loves the man in front of him so much, it feels like he could perish of it a second time.
"That's impossible, Engel," he finally laughs, voice carrying a faint tremble. Reaching out, he traces his thumb delicately over the crest of Herbert's ear, around and down his jawline, coming to rest under his chin.
"You're the most beautiful person I have ever seen."
"Oh, mon cheri," Herbert sighs, his voice fluttering with emotion. It's so sincere, the touch, the way Alfred is looking at him right now, with those blue blue eyes. The tremble in his voice. He can't believe it's been only a year since they first met and they danced together in the bathroom. It seems so far away, and just like yesterday, at the same time.
"I hope you have your dancing shoes on, because I plan to dance every dance with you tonight."
As nervous as Alfred is...he just can't stop smiling. He can't quite believe this is happening, that he's here, that he feels like this and it isn't all some dream he's going to wake up from in the morning. It's real. It's all real, and he's about to make the commitment to it.
He swallows hard, trying to shake off some nerves.
"Oh - of course, Engel. I owe you, still, from what we didn't do last year." The smile falters, just a little - he still feels badly about all that, as far behind them as it is now.
He sighs and kisses the corner of Alfred's mouth. "I am sorry that we didn't dance at the Ball. And even more so for being petty and bitter about it." He won't bring up how he was startled by the candle and jumped into someone's arms. That he'd prefer to forget.
"But tonight will be a fresh start for us, won't it? Now -- " He fusses with Alfred's lapels, frowning faintly. "You don't have to be there when father presents the villager to the coven. We both understand if you'd rather sit that part out."
"No, it's - it's not your fault," he attests, resting his hand on Herbert's arm gently. "It was...a hard night, for both of us. And I did at least get to...to watch you dance, a little." Granted, it had been when he should have been doing other things, but - well, a lot was happening at once.
A fresh start. Nerves pulse in Alfred, and he tries his best to keep them at bay.
Happily, he can blame the nerves on the comment, which...does genuinely make him cringe, eyes dropping to the hands fussing with his suit. Right. The...villager.
"...We...we'll see. I - I'm not sure I have the...stomach for that, not...not yet. I still- I still remember-" He lets the words drop, but they're obvious. He remembers how it felt to be in that position.
"Which is why Father and I thought it might be best if you weren't there for it. But it -- won't take long. And then that is done, the party will begin properly. And we can have our dance at last."
He rubs his hands over Alfred's arms; it's such a hard position for the poor boy to be in. But they've also come such a long way since last year. "It will be a lovely night. Let me look at you again. These colours really do suit you well, you know."
"...Thank you. For - for understanding," he stammers, face going a little red with overwhelm. It really is very sweet of them, thinking of him like that, letting him meet all this on his own terms.
His smile fully returns, a little bashful as he finally looks up at Herbert through his eyelashes.
"It will be," he breathes, another tremor shaking his tone. "And...thank you. I - I wanted to look - well, I wanted to...fit in, I suppose. With you, with your father, with - everyone. I was a little worried some of the coven might...recognize me?"
"Oh you don't need to worry about that, my love." His lip curls a little at the idea of any of the coven vampires sniffing Alfred out. "I'll be there to protect you. You have not a single thing to worry about."
"Oh it is, isn't it! Darling, my hair. Will you brush it for me once more? I want to make sure it looks perfect for tonight, and you always do it the best," he coos, taking both Alfred's hands and kissing his fingertips.
Even not knowing quite what's in store, he couldn't be more excited for tonight.
"Oh - of course, my moonlight. It will calm my nerves, anyhow."
He smiles at those little kisses - giggling a little, thinking about the first time Herbert had done that, versus...now. They really had come such a long way.
"Come, sit for a moment so I can take care of it."
"Do you have a moment to braid it back, do you think? Just a simple braid." He settles back at the vanity, absently checking his nails. Perfect and shiny and sharp. Delightful.
"I saw father with his hair done nicely for once, not so long ago. Was that your doing?"
"Yes, of course," he chirps, setting to work at once with well-practiced fingers. Herbert's hair is already so well brushed, it's easy to work with, soft and silky against his fingers as he parts it.
"Ah - yes, it was. We...we had a good talk, that night. I think I got through to him, just a little."
"I think that's wonderful. He needs a bright spot in his life, like you. Even though you're my sunlight, I'm willing to share a few rays with him. He could use them."
Alfred grins at this as he winds Herbert's hair around and around - tidy, even, graceful.
"I am...still getting used to the...ah...unusual relationships, here," he admits, slowly. "But at the end of the day...I am yours. And he is a good man, he just... he's stubborn."
"Yes, it's all a bit tangled, isn't it? Especially with Sarah and Magda spending more time together, lately." Magda's quickly becoming a good friend of his, and tells him all the most interesting gossip around the castle. He makes a point to spend time with her at least once or twice a week to trade secrets. "But at the end of the day, I'm glad you're mine."
Then the last part hits him -- "You yelled at Father?" Herbert gasps, looking utterly delighted. "Oh Alfred I'm so proud of you. He needs someone to yell at him, now and again. He's stubborn, as you say.
"It...is. But as long as everyone is all right, I...well. Anyway." It's still a bit of a strange topic, after all.
The praise actually makes Alfred giggle bashfully as he ties off the braid, setting it with a bow.
"Yes, he - you know I don't get angry, Engel, but he wouldn't listen, and I just...something gave. The...the fire all flickered, when it happened. It was so strange."
But he appreciates the pride, all the same - and he meets it with a kiss to the crown of Herbert's head.
"Well you certainly did something. I think it's wonderful. I hope he listens to you more, in the future."
Herbert fluffs his ribbon a little and reaches behind him to steal one of Alfred's hands to kiss it. "Let's head down, then! If you're ready, I'm ready."
On the way to the ballroom, his father pulls him aside and tucks a handkerchief into Herbert's sleeve while saying Just trust me. Cryptic, and odd, as usual, but Herbert takes it in stride because it's his father and he's used to that sort of thing.
Herbert holds Alfred's hand as they make their entrance, and gives him a bit of a twirl, just for fun. Then they move to the side to allow Georg to give his usual welcoming speech.
But much to Herbert's surprise, he pauses in his speech and says, "Before we present our meal for this year, I would like to give the floor over to Alfred. I believe he has something very important to say."
Herbert turns to Alfred, looking surprised but expectant. Looking forward to whatever he has to say.
When Georg pulls Herbert aside, Alfred takes that moment to allow himself his nerves, a bit of panic, blue eyes darting around the room. The coven, hissing and twitching...it brings back memories. Difficult ones.
But then his eyes fall on Herbert.
And he's Sure, all over again, just like that.
He grins as he's spun, keeping in step with ease, watching as Georg begins his speech...but this time, he's not pretending to belong. He does belong, Herbert's hand soft where their fingers are laced together.
But then he is being signaled...and he draws a long, steadying breath, letting go, striding forward, shoulders back and head held high. It's time.
He can swear he feels a gentle hand at his back, softly shepherding him forward.
"Thank you," he murmurs to Georg...before turning on his heel, raising his voice to echo through the ballroom.
"One year ago, I stood in this room as what I thought was a stranger. One year ago, I was scared to death, walking among you and not knowing if I was going to make it out alive. One year ago, I was lost, and I didn't know what I needed to find. I thought I knew, but...I was wrong.
One year ago...I was found. And one year ago...was when I really saw the moonlight for the first time."
He turns towards Herbert, holding out his hand beckoning for him to come forward.
Oh, Alfred has been trying so hard not to cry - but the sweet words, that little kiss...no, there's no sense pretending he isn't emotional. He grins sweetly, sniffling, nuzzling at Herbert's nose with his own.
"In you, Herbert, I have found everything I didn't know I was looking for. You have the other half of my heart, my soul... everything that I am is yours, Engel. Flesh, bone, and blood. And so...so...."
Now or never. In a motion he had practiced over and over and over again in his room, Alfred smoothly reaches into his pocket, pulling the ring box out as he drops down to one knee. His eyes sparkle as he looks up at his lover, expression full of love.
"...Herbert Von Krolock. Will you be mine, in return?"
He opens the box - inside is a ring, simple in make, but elegantly done. A moonstone sits glistening in the center, shining in the candlelight. The setting looks centuries old in style, an echo of another time, another life.
Choking back a little sob of joy, Alfred wastes no time in taking Herbert's hand to slide the ring onto his slender, graceful finger - and then he's practically jumping into his arms, grabbing him to pull him into a deep, enthusiastic kiss.
This is perfect. A perfect moment, and he didn't even mess it up.
Pulling back, he grins breathlessly, wiping away his own tears.
"...For eternity, Engel. I promise never to leave you, ever, ever again."
"For eternity," he sighs, pulling Alfred into a tight embrace. "We'll have each other forever."
Georg applauds, prompting some scattered clapping from the rest of the coven. But they are hungry, and Herbert needs to celebrate with his new fiance.
So he pulls Alfred into the next room and kisses him again. Long and deep and sweet, one hand coming up to stroke his cheek. When he finally pulls away, he holds up his hand to admire the way the ring looks on it. "Oh Alfred, it's perfect. Everything is perfect."
As sweeping as the gesture had been, Alfred is relieved to be out of the spotlight again - so he noticeably relaxes when he is pulled into the next room, where they have a moment of privacy. The kiss is reciprocated, one slender hand running softly down Herbert's back, holding him close.
He giggles when they pull apart, smiling sweetly at his - his fiance.
Oh, that's nice.
"I'm - I'm glad. I was afraid I would...make a mess of it, somehow? But I...I wanted to do this here. It felt right." He looks at the ring, laughing softly. "...And I want you to know, that ring was...well, I was trying to think of what to do for a ring, and...someone...told me where he had hidden this." From his pocket, he pulls the little box, so that Herbert can get a better look at it.
The inside, where the ring had been nestled, is cushioned with soft, dyed green wool.
